Bathroom Countertops

Custom Bathroom Countertops - Denver, CO

Functional and Aesthetically Pleasing

Bathroom countertops should not only be functional, but aesthetically pleasing. Our design consultants work with clients on finding a stone material that fits both of these criteria. Bathrooms are typically a frequented space in the home and require countertops that can sustain its everyday functions.

Bathroom countertops, first and foremost, should be able to tolerate water and moisture. Non porous stones such as quartz or porcelain are very practical to have in this space because not only do they repel water and moisture, but bacteria as well, making for an extremely hygienic surface.

Stones such as travertine and limestone readily absorb water and moisture, which can be disadvantageous depending on the use of the surface or application. Other stones such as granite and marble have varying levels of porosity depending on the type of slab for the particular stone material. Granite and Marble Designs knows the importance of understanding the similarities and differences among our stone options. Each stone has distinct characteristics that can affect how they perform in the bathroom.

Granite for Bathroom Countertops

Granite is a very practical choice to have in your bathroom because of its strength and durability. Granite is porous, but when properly sealed it can repel water and staining. It has many advantages as a bathroom countertop surface, including:

  • Heat resistance to hot hair-tools
  • Ability to take on everyday messes and bathroom routines
  • Low maintenance and easy cleaning

However, we do suggest wiping any acidic or highly concentrated liquids from the surface as they occur to avoid etching. Aside from bathroom countertops and vanities, granite can also be used for shower surrounds or bathroom flooring. This goes to show that it can be used nearly anywhere and function optimally in any space. We highly recommend granite for bathroom countertops.

Marble for Bathroom Countertops

Marble is an extremely elegant and timeless stone that you cannot go wrong with. It has earned its name due to its unique veining and distinct characteristics. It is a natural stone, so it is porous, but with extra maintenance and routine cleaning, it can be practical for your bathroom countertop design.

Messes and liquids should be promptly cleaned to avoid any staining or etching, and routine sealing should be done to avoid water absorption. There are many different types of marble, some softer than others, so some slabs are more suitable in the bathroom than others. In general, favorable traits for marble bathroom countertops include excellent heat tolerance, hard wearing and an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Travertine for Bathroom Countertops

Travertine is extremely porous, which can be beneficial for pool decks, but in the case for bathroom countertops, it requires regular sealings and maintenance. It has natural crevices and divots that make it readily absorbent. As a countertop, travertine can be susceptible to staining from moisture, water or other liquids.

In light of these drawbacks, travertine is naturally cooling and heat resistant – although we do not  recommend setting heat styling tools directly on your travertine countertops. With proper upkeep, travertine can be a great choice for your bathroom countertops or vanity.

Limestone for Bathroom Countertops

Limestone performs and functions similarly to travertine. It is also highly porous and reactive to acids, so it needs to be sealed properly, especially when used for bathroom countertops and wet areas. We make sure our clients are aware of how to care for their limestone and best preserve it when used in spaces such as bathrooms.

Even though it is sensitive to staining, etching and even scratches, it can be used in bathroom applications depending on its intended use. Limestone may be best used in less frequented bathrooms or spaces, but don’t let this stop you from making it an option.

Soapstone for Bathroom Countertops

Soapstone works anywhere. This is the most durable countertop surface there is, and is the only natural stone that is non porous. It performs best when used for bathroom countertops. Soapstone will not be penetrated by typical bathroom messes or liquids such as nail polish remover, cleaners, makeup or other cosmetics. In addition, it is heat and scratch resistant. The qualities of soapstone make it highly favorable for use of bathroom countertops.
