Why granite is ideal for kitchens and other high-traffic areas
Granite is an igneous rock, one of the hardest and heaviest stones sold for countertops and one of the most durable work surfaces available. It is natural, earth-made stone composed of different minerals, which is what gives each slab its own character. Compared to other stones, granite resists heat, staining, scratches, etching and cracks well. In plain terms:
- It handles heat. Hot pans and hot hair tools won’t hurt the stone itself. The sealer and the epoxy in the seams can be affected by extreme heat, though, so we still recommend a trivet.
- It’s hard to scratch. About the only things that scratch granite are diamonds, carbide and other granite. Knives will dull on it, so don’t use it as a cutting board.
- It works in every room. Granite is a good fit for kitchen countertops, bathroom countertops, wet bars, wall surrounds and flooring slabs. It handles cold, heat and everyday wear in high-traffic spots.
- Every slab is one of a kind. Granite usually shows more grain and speckle than veining, with hundreds of colors and patterns to choose from. No two slabs match exactly.
Granite does have two tradeoffs. Unlike porcelain or quartz, granite is porous, so harsh chemicals can affect it. It needs to be sealed correctly and cleaned with products made for granite. And it’s heavy: 3 cm granite runs roughly 16 to 22 pounds per square foot, depending on the color, so your cabinets need to be solid and secured before we install.
